Christian Leaders in UK Call for End to Israel’s Occupation of Palestine
Christian leaders from across the United Kingdom have united in a cross-denominational effort to advocate for an end to the occupation of Palestine. The West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza have been under Israeli control since 1967, with the International Court of Justice issuing an advisory opinion in 2024 that deemed Israel’s presence there unlawful. These regions hold profound religious significance for Jews, Christians, and Muslims, including sites like the Western Wall, Al-Aqsa Mosque, and the birthplace of Jesus Christ.
The Just Peace Coalition, a group of churches and charities, has launched a campaign called “Time To Act,” emphasizing the devastating impact of the ongoing conflict and rising settler violence on communities, particularly Christians and Muslims. The coalition highlights that approximately 50,000 Christians reside in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, with an estimated 1,000 in Gaza. The campaign calls for the UK government to take several steps, including banning trade and investment in illegal settlements, suspending the UK-Israel Trade and Partnership Agreement, and halting arms sales to Israel until it complies with international law.
The coalition also urges the UK to impose sanctions on Israeli officials responsible for severe human rights violations and to support the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court in ensuring accountability. These measures are intended to promote justice, peace, and respect for human rights in the region. The coalition’s demands reflect a commitment to upholding the principles of mercy, justice, and neighbor-love, as seen in passages like Romans 12:18, which encourages seeking peace with all.
Participating organizations include a wide range of faith groups and charities, such as All We Can, Amos Trust, CAFOD, Christian Aid, and the Methodist Church. These groups bring together diverse voices to address the complex humanitarian and religious challenges in the Holy Land. The Revd Mark Slaney, a Methodist Church leader who visited the West Bank, expressed the deep longing of Palestinian Christians for a just peace, underscoring the moral imperative to act in solidarity with those affected by the conflict.
The coalition’s campaign reflects a broader call for accountability and justice, rooted in the belief that all people, regardless of faith or background, deserve dignity and protection. As the situation in the Holy Land continues to evolve, the voices of Christian leaders serve as a reminder of the enduring call to pursue peace and uphold the sanctity of human life.
