Church Women United and The Salvation Army recently partnered to provide school clothes and shoes for over 100 children in the community, using donations collected during the annual Lenten Luncheons. The initiative aimed to ease the financial burden on families as they prepared for the new school year, offering practical support rooted in compassion and neighborly care.
Volunteers from multiple churches worked together to make the event a success, with some children expressing gratitude through high-fives and smiles. Christa Ciotola, a representative of Church Women United, noted that this year’s effort was particularly impactful, as it included both clothing and footwear for the children. “This was a unique experience for us,” she said, explaining that the group typically donated clothes to The Salvation Army but had the opportunity to give them directly to the children this time.
The project involved two shopping days—one at Walmart for clothing and another for shoes. Over 91 out of 98 children attended the shoe-fitting event, with volunteers from 10 different churches contributing their time and resources. Corina, who helped design the process, emphasized the importance of collaboration, noting that the team had brainstormed ways to improve participation, such as holding the shoe event in the evening to accommodate working parents.
The initiative was made possible through the Lenten Luncheons, where community members contributed meals and donations. Kay Dunfee, a volunteer, highlighted the sense of fulfillment that came from helping children, saying, “It gives you such a good feeling because it’s just great to help kids.” The event also showcased the broader impact of the Lenten Luncheons, which involve not only food service but also music, cleanup, and outreach to families in need.
Church Women United’s efforts reflect a commitment to practical mercy, echoing the biblical call to care for the vulnerable. As the apostle Paul wrote, “Do good to all people, especially to those of the household of faith” (Galatians 6:10). The collaboration between churches and local businesses like Walmart exemplifies how communities can come together to support one another, embodying the spirit of neighbor-love.
The success of the project was a testament to the power of collective action, with at least 10 churches participating in both shopping days. Walmart employees also played a supportive role, with one greeter expressing appreciation for the volunteers’ efforts. The initiative not only provided immediate relief but also strengthened the bonds of fellowship and mutual care within the community.
