Dorothy Jean Rieck, a devoted member of the Church of Christ, Scientist, passed away on August 19, 2026, at the home of her daughter in Canton, Michigan. She was 99 years old. Dorothy was born on July 4, 1927, in Los Angeles, California, to Clarence and Helen Dunneback. At the age of five, her father, a native of Detroit, moved the family back to Michigan to manage the family’s real estate holdings. Dorothy grew up in various Detroit neighborhoods and graduated from Highland Park High School in 1945.

After high school, Dorothy joined her mother as an employee of the J.L. Hudson Company, first in cold storage and later in the clerical department at the downtown store. She briefly modeled for Hudson’s, appearing on the cover of the company magazine in a fashionable hat and veil. In the late 1940s, Dorothy met Karl Rieck at a function sponsored by her church, the Third Church of Christ Scientist in Detroit. The couple married on September 22, 1951, and built a life together.

Dorothy’s career continued after her children were older, and she eventually became a receptionist for Wolverine Fabricating Co., where she worked until her retirement in the early 1990s. Her interests included movies, music, bowling, theatre, dancing, her family, and the Detroit Tigers. She celebrated her 90th birthday at Comerica Park, a testament to her enduring love for the Tigers. Dorothy was also proud of her family heritage, being a descendant of one of the original French settlers of Detroit, Jean Baptiste Chapoton.

Known for her grace, style, and kindness, Dorothy was a devoted wife and mother. She carried these qualities into her community and relationships, often displaying endearing, entertaining traits that endeared her to family and friends. Her life was marked by a deep commitment to her faith and the values of the Church of Christ, Scientist.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband, Karl. She is survived by her three children, Gary (wife Mary; son Carson), Scott (wife Candace; son Bogdan; daughter Sabrina), and Kimberly (son Matthew). In accordance with her wishes, a private service will be held. Her life serves as a reminder of the importance of love, kindness, and devotion to family and faith.
