Dr. Richard Burns, Renowned Internist and Community Leader, Passes Away at 84
Dr. Richard Burns, a dedicated internist, served the Jonesboro community for over 30 years, leaving a legacy of medical excellence and community service. Born in 1934 in Bellevue, Nebraska, Dr. Burns grew up in a military family, which led to numerous relocations, eventually settling in Tennessee. There, he met his wife, Laura Grizzard, whom he married after a year studying at a German university. Dr. Burns completed his medical education at the University of Tennessee and UT Medical School in Memphis, where he began his residency at Baptist Hospital in 1960.
In 1967, prompted by his close friend and colleague Dr. Owen Clopton, Dr. Burns moved to Jonesboro. He brought specialized skills in internal medicine and cardio-pulmonary diseases, offering services such as placing temporary cardiac pacemakers and performing liver biopsies—procedures previously unavailable in the area. Dr. Burns also served as the tuberculosis control doctor for Lawrence County and played a pivotal role in initiating inpatient treatment for tuberculosis at St. Bernard’s Hospital after the closure of the Booneville sanatorium.
Throughout his career, Dr. Burns was heavily involved in hospital administration, serving as chairman of the intensive care committee and director of the intensive care unit. Despite his demanding schedule, he found time for family and personal interests. Dr. Burns enjoyed running, swimming, biking, and playing tennis, often training for marathons with his son, Bob. He also cherished moments of tranquility at their family cabin on Spring River, where he engaged in trout fishing, canoeing, and reading works by Tolstoy, Chekhov, and Solzhenitsyn, accompanied by one of his Boston Terriers.
Dr. Burns retired in 1998, honored by the Jonesboro Heart Guild for his contributions to the community. His life exemplifies the biblical principle of loving one’s neighbor through service and dedication, as reflected in Matthew 25:35, which speaks to caring for those in need. Dr. Burns’s legacy continues to inspire those who value compassion and commitment in their professional and personal lives.
