Emir of Qatar Calls Israel’s Attack on Gaza Genocide, Demands Accountability for Perpetrators
The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, described the situation in the Gaza Strip as genocide during his address at the 55th annual session of the Qatar Shura Council in Doha on October 13. He stated that those responsible for the actions in Gaza must not be allowed to escape accountability. This declaration was included in the official speech of the Emir, reflecting Qatar’s stance on the ongoing conflict.
Qatar has long played a role as a mediator in efforts to end the war in Gaza. The Emir emphasized that Doha would continue to collaborate with other nations and international partners to ensure regional stability and security. His remarks underscore Qatar’s commitment to maintaining peace and security in the Middle East amid escalating tensions.
According to Palestinian authorities, over 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and more than 175,000 injured in Gaza since October 2023. Most of the victims are women and children, and approximately 90 percent of the region’s infrastructure has been damaged or destroyed. These figures highlight the severe humanitarian crisis facing the population.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on November 21, 2024, for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. This development reflects growing international concern over the conduct of military operations in the region.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is still processing the case filed by South Africa against Israel, alleging violations of the Genocide Convention. Several countries have since intervened in the case, indicating a broader international response to the situation in Gaza.
Qatar, Egypt, and Turkey mediated the Gaza ceasefire agreement, which took effect on October 10, 2025, as part of a plan proposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump. However, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported that since the agreement, 1,493 Palestinians have been killed and 5,299 injured due to Israeli attacks, with most victims being women and children.
Israel is reportedly restricting the entry of aid, including food, medicine, medical supplies, shelter materials, and prefabricated houses, according to the agreed quantities. This has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where approximately 2.4 million Palestinians reside, with around 2.15 million displaced due to the deteriorating conditions. The situation underscores the urgent need for humanitarian access and international support.
