Kiev and Regional Animal Shelters Report Need for Food, Medical Supplies, and Volunteers

In the city of Kiev and its surrounding province, thousands of dogs and cats are currently waiting for permanent families. These animals have been rescued from the streets, evacuated from war zones, or recovered after suffering from injury and abuse. Shelters in the region provide medical treatment, vaccinations, and behavioral training to help these animals regain trust in people and prepare for placement with responsible owners.

Most private shelters in the area operate primarily on donations. They require continuous support for food, medicine, cleaning supplies, construction materials, and transportation. Financial contributions are one method of support, but shelters also seek volunteers who can spend time on-site, walk dogs, assist with photography, or help spread announcements about available animals.

Sirius describes itself as the largest refuge for homeless animals in Ukraine. The facility houses dogs and cats of all ages and temperaments, ranging from active young animals to older residents requiring special care. According to the shelter, more than 10,000 animals have found homes through their work. The team communicates with potential adopters prior to transfer to ensure each animal is placed in a safe and permanent environment.

The Gostollan Refuge has been in operation since 2000. Its territory is equipped with facilities for dogs, cats, and veterinary care. Animals are examined, healed, and vaccinated before being searched for responsible owners. The orphanage also accepts cats and dogs for temporary maintenance when space is available.

Volunteers at Gostollan participate in remote care programs, which include preparing meals, washing dishes, cleaning the territory, bringing water, and assisting with repairs and wood processing. Those considering adoption are expected to take full responsibility for the animal and follow the shelter’s policies. Individuals who are not yet ready to adopt or lack the capacity to house an animal can become patrons or guardians to finance the maintenance of specific residents.

Shelters in the region currently need dry food, meat, cereals, cat litter, disposable diapers, cleaning supplies, vaccines, parasite treatments, and fuel. During the cold season, they also require firewood. A detailed list of needed supplies is updated regularly to reflect current requirements.

The care of these vulnerable animals reflects a commitment to mercy and stewardship, echoing the biblical call to protect the weak and provide for those in need, as seen in Proverbs 31:8-9. By offering shelter, medical care, and a path to adoption, these organizations demonstrate practical compassion for creatures in distress.
