First United Methodist Church’s After-School Program Expands Outdoor Adventures with Haywood County Rec Partnership

Middle school students participating in the free after-school program at First United Methodist Church in Waynesville have been given the chance to explore the great outdoors through a partnership with Haywood County Recreation and Parks. This collaboration, which began last spring, offers outdoor activities such as hiking, fly-fishing, and mountain biking, allowing students to engage with the county’s natural resources.

This fall, the partnership has been renewed, providing an additional opportunity for students to experience the outdoors. Anna Belle Lamar, the Director of Youth Outreach at FUMC, highlighted the positive impact of this programming, noting that it enriches the after-school experience by offering diverse activities beyond traditional sports. Lamar reported enthusiastic feedback from both students and parents, with some students even continuing to engage in outdoor activities independently after participating in the program.

The program fills a significant gap for middle schoolers, who often have limited opportunities to be active outside of school unless involved in organized sports. Haywood County Rec coordinates with outdoor adventure guides, including a certified youth recreation therapist from HIGHTS, a nonprofit dedicated to youth empowerment across Western North Carolina.

This fall, the program includes seven outings, with the exciting addition of paddle boarding at Lake Junaluska. Lamar expressed enthusiasm for the continuation of these programs, underscoring the value of the partnership in providing enriching experiences for the youth. This initiative aligns with the biblical principle of loving one’s neighbor and investing in the well-being of the community, as reflected in Matthew 25:35, which emphasizes the importance of feeding, clothing, and caring for those in need.
