Florida Police Charge Assemblies of God Pastor with Failing to Report Child Sex Abuse Allegations

In a recent development, a senior pastor from the Assemblies of God denomination in Florida has been charged with failing to report allegations of child sex abuse to authorities. Mark Vega, 55, who serves as the senior pastor at Ignite Life Center in Gainesville, is accused of intentionally obstructing the reporting of these allegations. According to an Aug. 20 complaint filed in Alachua County Circuit Court, Vega allegedly sought to manage the situation internally, thus violating Florida law, which mandates that any person aware of child abuse must report it to the authorities. Failure to comply with this requirement is considered a felony.

The charges against Vega come in the wake of a series of allegations involving sex abuse at a school and youth camp managed by Ignite Life Center. Since 2023, three youth leaders from the church, including Vega’s son, have faced charges related to the sexual abuse of minors during church activities. Furthermore, the families of six alleged victims have initiated lawsuits against Ignite Life Center and the Florida Multicultural District, a regional Assemblies of God entity, accusing them of negligence in safeguarding children.

According to the criminal complaint, Vega was made aware of abuse reports as early as 2019. However, witnesses have claimed that he consistently chose to address these allegations internally rather than reporting them to law enforcement. This alleged inaction purportedly allowed further harm to come to more students. In 2022, following accusations against Vega’s adult son and another individual for coercing underage girls into sexual activities, Vega reportedly devised a plan with the family of an alleged victim to avoid involving the police.

Jessica Arbour, an attorney representing five of the alleged victims, has stated that Vega and other church leaders engaged in a “pattern and practice of ignoring, and in some cases actively covering up,” evidence of abuse. She emphasized that child sexual abuse is not only the result of abusers’ actions but also systemic failures that embolden abusers by creating an environment where they feel safe to commit such acts. Arbour expressed hope that the involvement of law enforcement would demonstrate a serious commitment to addressing these allegations.
