Former FLDS Member Testifies Against Warren Jeffs in Child Sexual Assault Trial
Rebecca Musser, a former member of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (FLDS), played a pivotal role in the downfall of Warren Jeffs, the group’s former leader. Once a devout follower, Musser’s life took a dramatic turn as she began to question the strict doctrines and practices of the FLDS community. Her testimony in court became a critical factor in Jeffs’ conviction for child sexual assault, marking a significant moment in the group’s legal history.
Musser, one of 25 siblings, was raised within the FLDS, where women were expected to adhere to specific dress codes and maintain obedience. She was known as “Sister Becky” and attended Alta Academy, a FLDS school where Warren Jeffs served as principal. Despite his role as a strict authority figure, Musser noted that Jeffs often appeared calculating, prioritizing power and position over genuine connection.
Jeffs, the son of FLDS prophet Rulon Jeffs, was seen as a close confidant to his father and acted as his messenger. Musser described him as an authority figure within the school, often engaging in discussions with the prophet. However, she frequently found herself in conflict with Jeffs due to her questioning nature and refusal to accept certain teachings without understanding their reasoning.
At 19, Musser was assigned to marry Rulon Jeffs, becoming his 19th wife in 1995. This union, like many within the FLDS, was part of the group’s polygamous practices. Musser’s experience within the community led to a growing disillusionment, setting the stage for her eventual decision to leave and testify against Jeffs.
Musser’s journey from a devoted member to a key witness against Jeffs highlights the internal struggles within the FLDS. Her actions reflect the tension between obedience and personal conviction, a theme echoed in Micah 6:8, which calls for acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God. Her testimony ultimately contributed to Jeffs’ conviction, underscoring the impact of individual choices within religious communities.
