The Public Prosecutor’s Office in Lille, France, has announced the opening of a judicial investigation against Jacques Delvos, a former priest, on suspicion of sexual assault and rape of minors. The investigation is led by prosecutor Samuel Viniles, who stated that the alleged facts under review date from 1990 to 2002.

The allegations concern seven individuals who participated in summer camps organized by Delvos. According to the prosecutor, these individuals were between 5 and 18 years old at the time of the alleged incidents. A total of 26 persons filed complaints against the former priest, though 19 of these complaints were closed or are in the process of closure due to statute of limitations.

Delvos was previously convicted in 2007 of five years’ imprisonment, including six months in force, for the rape of two girls under the age of 15 during the 1980s. This prior conviction establishes a history of legal accountability for sexual offenses committed during his tenure as a clergy member.

In 2025, Catholic Church authorities in Steinberg stripped Delvos of his priestly character. This ecclesiastical action follows the recent judicial developments and underscores the institutional response to the allegations of misconduct within the clergy.

The case highlights the intersection of criminal law and ecclesiastical discipline in addressing abuse by religious leaders. The distinction between prior convictions and new investigations is critical in understanding the timeline of accountability for Delvos’s actions.

Public trust in religious institutions depends on the transparent handling of such cases. The pursuit of justice in this matter reflects the broader societal commitment to protecting minors and ensuring that those in positions of trust are held to high standards of conduct.

As the investigation proceeds, the focus remains on the legal process and the welfare of the victims. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability in both secular and religious spheres, where the safety of the vulnerable must be paramount.
