Former Johnson County Priest Pleads Guilty to Church Fund Theft
Richard Edward Storey, a former priest at Curé of Ars Catholic Church in Leawood, Kansas, has pleaded guilty to one count of theft involving funds valued between $25,000 and $100,000. This follows his initial plea of not guilty to a more severe charge of felony theft exceeding $100,000 in June.
The amended charge came after an affidavit detailed allegations of unauthorized spending on a church credit card. Church officials reported $159,326 in unauthorized transactions, including over $77,000 spent on cruise vacations and more than $20,000 withdrawn from a casino. These transactions raised concerns about financial mismanagement and prompted police involvement in March.
Church leaders, in collaboration with law enforcement, addressed these issues. The financial discrepancies highlighted the importance of accountability in managing resources entrusted to the Church. Archbishop Shawn McKnight expressed deep sorrow over the allegations, emphasizing the pain caused to the Catholic community.
The case underscores the need for transparency and ethical stewardship within religious institutions. The guilty plea marks a significant step in addressing the misuse of church funds, reflecting the gravity of the situation and the impact on the congregation’s trust.
The incident serves as a reminder of the responsibility that comes with handling communal resources. It also highlights the ongoing efforts within the Catholic Church to uphold integrity and ensure the faithful use of donations and offerings. The resolution of this case will likely influence future practices and oversight within the diocese.
