Former NGA Teacher Pleads Guilty to Sex Crimes with Student in Greene County
Sherri Delle Mauldin, a former teacher at Nathanael Greene Academy in Greene County, admitted to having sexual encounters with a male student who was 15 at the time. The case, which led to her arrest and widespread media attention, resulted in the closure of the private Christian school.
Mauldin, 61, was sentenced to 12 years in prison and 25 years of probation by Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Terry N. Massey. She was also required to register as a sex offender. The court’s decision fell short of the prosecutors’ recommendation of an 18-year prison term.
Mauldin’s defense attorney, Adam Levin, had advocated for a probationary sentence and possible weekend jail confinement. However, the prosecution, led by District Attorney T. Wright Barksdale III and Assistant District Attorney Blayne May, emphasized the severity of the crimes, including the age disparity between the teacher and student, the nature of the relationship, and the duration and frequency of the incidents.
Barksdale highlighted the aggravating factors in the case, noting the significant age gap, the teacher-student relationship, the span of time over which the acts occurred, and the multiple locations and acts involved. He stated that the defense initially misled law enforcement, which influenced the court’s consideration of the case.
The prosecution aimed to avoid subjecting the community to a lengthy trial, focusing instead on the clear legal and moral implications of the case. The outcome reflects the legal system’s response to the serious nature of the offenses and the need for accountability.
