Whistle Stop, a local restaurant in Buckhannon, has become a central hub for free meals as the community recovers from recent flooding. A corkboard by the door is filled with receipts, each representing a pre-paid meal available to anyone in need. The restaurant explained that all meals have been generously pre-paid and are open to anyone who may appreciate a warm meal during this challenging time.

Several local churches and organizations are also stepping up to provide meals and support. Traveling Dawgz will serve free meals starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 26, in the Tractor Supply Co. parking lot. First United Methodist Church will host a Micah Meal at noon on the same day, offering a menu that includes chicken, baked beans, macaroni salad, and desserts. Chapel Hill United Methodist Church will provide meals from 3 to 5 p.m. on Monday, July 27, and again on Wednesday, July 29, and Friday, July 31.

The community is encouraged to participate in these efforts, with clear guidelines provided on how to access the meals. A handwritten sign explains that individuals can pick up a ticket and hand it to a server or bartender. Those who wish to contribute can ask an employee for more information. Whistle Stop has received over $300 in meal pre-payments and nearly $500 in cash donations, allowing the program to continue for the foreseeable future.

Operation BBQ Relief is also providing lunch and dinner at a community support site established at the Walmart Supercenter on Buckhannon Crossroads. Additional resources, including mobile showers, laundry services, charging stations, and Wi-Fi, are expected to be available at the site in the coming days.

Feed My Sheep Food Outreach is holding a food giveaway on Saturday, July 25, at the corner of Brushy Fork and Stoney Run Road. Numbers will be distributed at 9 a.m., with food distribution beginning at 10 a.m. To participate, individuals must be parked in a lot by the outreach’s parking attendants. No parking is allowed on the grass at the hall or church, which is reserved for volunteers.

South Buckhannon Mission Church is offering free take-out meals for anyone in need starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 179 S. Kanawha St., served hot meals on Friday until 9 p.m.

These efforts reflect the biblical call to care for the hungry and the marginalized, as seen in Matthew 25:35, where Jesus says, “I was hungry and you gave me food.” The community’s response to the flood highlights the importance of neighbor-love and practical mercy, ensuring that no one goes without essential support during this time of need.
