Gaza aid flotilla rejects Church’s aid redistribution request
A flotilla of 52 boats, including civilian vessels, has been detained in Greek waters for several days. The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) is attempting to deliver aid to Gaza, where the UN has declared a genocide is taking place. The Italian government has called on the Catholic Church to redistribute the aid it is carrying, but the flotilla has rejected these calls.
Spain and Italy have deployed naval ships to join the flotilla and protect it in international waters. The group is now making its way toward Gaza. President Sergio Mattarella of Italy has appealed to the flotilla to work with the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, which is committed to supporting the people of Gaza. He emphasized the importance of avoiding risks to human life in the region.
Activists on board the flotilla reported seeing flares and unidentified objects being dropped onto the boats, which they described as an alarming escalation. Greta Thunberg, who is on one of the boats, is determined to deliver the aid. This is her second attempt to reach Gaza, following a previous attempt in June that was stopped by the Israeli government, which called the vessel a “selfie yacht.”
Thunberg shared clips of the voyage and her arrest on social media, stating she does not believe anyone would risk their life for a publicity stunt. Last month, a UN-backed body confirmed that the situation in Gaza amounts to a man-made famine. The flotilla’s mission highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the urgent need for aid delivery to those in need.
