Groundbreaking announced for Lehi Utah Temple on Dec. 5
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced that ground will be broken for the Lehi Utah Temple on December 5. The groundbreaking ceremony will be presided over by Elder John A. McCune, first counselor in the Utah Area Presidency. This event marks the next step in the construction of a new temple in Lehi, Utah.
The temple, which will be approximately 85,000 square feet, will be located on a 22.48-acre property at 3950 North and Center Street. It will be situated alongside a new meetinghouse. The location was previously disclosed by the church, along with an exterior rendering of the temple.
The Lehi Utah Temple will be built about two and a half years after late President Russell M. Nelson announced the temple in April 2024. This announcement comes as part of the church’s ongoing efforts to expand its temple network across the United States.
Utah currently has 24 operating temples, with eight additional temples either announced, under construction, or undergoing renovation. The Salt Lake Temple, the church’s headquarters, is set to reopen next year following a six-month open house and celebration after its extensive renovation.
Other temples in Utah under construction include the Heber Valley Utah Temple and the Smithfield Utah Temple, which is scheduled for dedication on April 18 after an open house. These projects reflect the church’s commitment to providing sacred spaces for its members to participate in spiritual ceremonies.
The church’s statement on the groundbreaking emphasized that the primary purpose of temples is to allow faithful members to engage in sacred ceremonies, such as marriages that unite families forever and proxy baptisms for deceased ancestors who did not have the opportunity to be baptized during their lifetimes. These ceremonies are central to the church’s teachings and practices.
