Israeli President Isaac Herzog Addresses Christian Exodus Concerns, Stresses Peace and Reconciliation at Annual Reception

Israeli President Isaac Herzog expressed concern about the departure of young Christian families from Israel during a reception for Christian leaders in Jerusalem. Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III, representing the Council of Churches in the Holy Land, expressed hope that the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas would lead to a lasting peace, healing the wounds from past conflicts. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to deliver humanitarian aid, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, women, the elderly, and the sick, including Gazan children receiving cancer treatment at Augusta Victoria Hospital in Jerusalem.

Patriarch Theophilos also addressed the challenges posed by radical groups in the West Bank and Jerusalem, calling for effective measures to ensure the well-being and safety of communities living together. He highlighted the need to address crime and violence affecting northern Israeli communities. In closing, Theophilos affirmed the commitment of church leaders to their spiritual mission of promoting peace and reconciliation, working alongside President Herzog and others to combat antisemitism and Islamophobia. This commitment reflects the biblical call to “be at peace with one another” (Romans 12:18) and to “seek justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).
