Israeli Town Removes American Flag After Mayor Criticizes Trump’s Endorsement of Netanyahu
The mayor of Metula, a town on Israel’s border with Lebanon, removed the American flag from its town center after President Donald Trump endorsed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israeli politics. Mayor David Azoulay expressed gratitude for Trump’s support in releasing hostages held by Hamas but criticized the U.S. president for interfering in Israeli elections and failing to address the Iranian threat.
Metula, the northernmost community in Israel, has been heavily impacted by the Iran war and attacks from Hezbollah. Surrounded by Lebanon on three sides, the town has faced frequent missile and rocket bombardment, with nearly all homes destroyed or damaged. Following the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, most residents were evacuated, but many have since returned, bringing life and hope back to the area.
In March, the Israeli military invaded Lebanon after a joint U.S.-Israel attack on Iran, pushing Hezbollah away from the border. This operation caused significant damage to infrastructure and civilian casualties in Lebanon. Despite these efforts, the war continues, and U.S.-led peace talks to disarm Hezbollah remain uncertain.
Azoulay emphasized that Metula is not a banana republic and that residents should be free to choose their leaders without foreign interference. He criticized Trump for talking extensively about the Iran regime but taking little action, while also acknowledging the need to confront Iran’s influence through groups like Hezbollah.
The ongoing conflict has left Metula in a state of recovery, with residents striving to rebuild their lives amid the lingering threat of war. The town remains a symbol of resilience, even as the broader regional tensions persist.
