Local Pastor Admits Wrongdoing in COVID Fraud Scheme, Pleads Guilty to Wire Fraud, Sentenced to 30 Months in Prison

Taylor, who faced considerable financial challenges, including the loss of his trucking company and a basketball program, expressed in a letter to U.S. District Judge Charles E. Atchley, Jr., that he was “shocked, stunned, and paralyzed” by his circumstances.

Taylor, 36, has agreed to plead guilty to one count of wire fraud and has been sentenced to 30 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release. His acknowledgment of wrongdoing and acceptance of responsibility are reflected in his heartfelt apology, where he admits to the dishonesty that led to his financial gain during the pandemic. In his letter, he detailed the profound impact of his actions, not only on his personal life but also on his community, as he faced the loss of trust and leadership roles within his church.

The Department of Justice reported that Taylor submitted eight fraudulent applications, resulting in the misappropriation of funds meant to support businesses during the pandemic. The court has ordered Taylor to pay a money judgment of $942,238.85 and restitution of $2,532,528.18 to the United States. Despite the gravity of his actions, Taylor received over 20 letters of support from friends, family, and former colleagues, including Lipscomb University and the City of Chattanooga Office of Community Health, highlighting his previous contributions and character.
