Individuals, including many elderly and disabled persons, as well as families with young children, gathered in the large seating area on Elm Avenue, waiting patiently to be called for assistance. The pantry, known as Lord’s Cupboard, serves as a vital resource for the community, offering groceries to those facing hardship.
This increase coincided with the ongoing federal government shutdown, which has disrupted the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Despite a recent federal judge’s ruling mandating the payment of these benefits, it remains uncertain when they will be fully restored. The prolonged uncertainty surrounding SNAP has placed additional pressure on residents struggling to provide for their families.
The pantry’s manager, Shirley Cross, along with officials from the Mid-Willamette Valley Community Action Agency—a partner social services agency—confirmed the steady rise in demand. They reported that attendance had climbed substantially from previous levels, with the pantry prepared to serve approximately 200 people on that day, compared to an average of about 116 the prior month. Cross emphasized the growing need requires increased support.
One resident, David Martinez, shared his experience. He had secured a spot in line for his family of five, despite the rain. Martinez explained that he began relying on the pantry after falling ill and losing his ability to work as a tradesman. He also noted his application for SNAP benefits was denied, citing his daughter’s income, even though he clarified the money belonged to her.
The pantry operates efficiently, with volunteers calling people forward to shop, offering assistance in both English and Spanish. As individuals were served, Martinez remained attentive, pausing each time his name was announced. The scene outside the pantry reflected the broader community impact of the economic instability, with many seeking practical help to meet their immediate needs.
