Leaders of Lutheran World Federation (LWF) member churches in Indonesia participated in a training program focused on translating Lutheran theology into practical ministry. The event, held in Parapat, North Sumatra province, from 3 to 5 September, brought together around 50 ordained and lay leaders from the 14 LWF member churches in Indonesia. The program, titled “Responsible Theology and Transformative Leadership,” was facilitated by the National Committee of The Lutheran World Federation (KN-LWF) in Indonesia and the LWF Communion Office.

Participants included heads of departments and offices across various ministries such as theology, diakonia, mission, youth, women, justice and peace, communication, and administration. The training aimed to deepen their understanding of responsible theology within their national and local contexts while strengthening their sense of belonging to the broader Lutheran communion.

The program emphasized the importance of leaders ensuring that church ministries remain rooted in Lutheran theological identity while responding compassionately to community needs. Rev. Katariina Kiilunen, LWF Program Executive for Transformative Leadership, highlighted the role of leaders as “bridges” who translate Lutheran confession into policies, programs, and pastoral initiatives.

Kiilunen noted that leaders are tasked with a ministry of faithful stewardship, ensuring that church ministries are both theologically grounded and responsive to the realities of the communities they serve. The training sought to equip participants with the tools to foster a deeper sense of communal identity and purpose.

Through reflection, dialogue, and mutual learning, the program aimed to renew the participants’ commitment to their churches and the global Lutheran communion. The experience was designed to empower leaders to carry forward the mission of the church with integrity and compassion.
