Man Files Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Against Jehovah’s Witnesses Organization After Alleged Childhood Molestation by Elder
A 26-year-old man has filed a lawsuit against the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization, alleging he was sexually abused as a child. The claim centers on an elder in the San Dimas Spanish Congregation, who is accused of molesting the plaintiff for years beginning when he was six years old.
The plaintiff, Kevin Ramirez, described the elders as figures of trust and authority within the congregation, likening their role to that of a priest. He stated, “You are taught to trust these elders with everything. They are your mentors, they’re the equivalent to what a priest would be.”
The lawsuit names Humberto Ramirez as the accused elder and alleges that he used his position to sexually abuse multiple boys within the congregation. The legal action targets the governing board of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, with the plaintiff’s attorney, Irwin Zalkin, asserting that the organization has a history of child sexual abuse and has allegedly covered up such incidents for decades.
Zalkin accused the organization of maintaining a pervasive and severe problem of child sexual abuse, claiming that it has failed to address these issues adequately. The Jehovah’s Witnesses organization responded in a statement, expressing its condemnation of child abuse in any form and stating that its stance on the matter is clear. The organization also expressed sympathy for those who have suffered from child sexual abuse.
The Jehovah’s Witnesses organization has stated it will not comment on pending litigation but emphasized its commitment to following the law. The case highlights ongoing concerns about accountability within religious institutions and the need for transparency in addressing allegations of abuse.
