Mecosta “The Village” Free Methodist Church to Host One-Year Dedication and Anniversary Service
Mecosta “The Village” Free Methodist Church has celebrated its first anniversary in the community, marking a year of growth and service. Pastor Dar Howard, who initially planned to return to Houston to continue his work as a racetrack chaplain, chose to remain in Mecosta and establish the church. The congregation has grown to more than 50 members since its formation a year ago.
Howard emphasized the strong support from the local community during the church’s early days. Members actively engaged in outreach, knocking on doors to inform residents about the new church, with no negative responses. This grassroots effort helped lay the foundation for the congregation’s growth.
To commemorate the church’s first year, Mecosta “The Village” Free Methodist Church will host a one-year anniversary and building dedication service on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. The event will include participation from churches that supported the church’s start, such as the Lighthouse Barryton Community Free Methodist Church, and will feature hymns performed by the Sylvester Community Church Choir. The service is open to the public.
Howard was approached about starting a Free Methodist Church in Mecosta in August 2013 after attending the Barryton Community Free Methodist Church. At the time, he was working as a chaplain at Mount Pleasant Meadows with the Racetrack Chaplaincy of America. After some deliberation, he decided to pursue forming a church in Mecosta, a decision he described as the right thing to do.
The church began meeting in the Howards’ home for Bible studies in September 2013. The first formal service took place in October 2013 at the Sluggers Restaurant building. As attendance grew, the congregation faced the challenge of finding a permanent location. A vacant building across the street, previously a bar, was identified as a potential site.
Despite not being officially established with the conference at the time, the church received full support from the North Michigan Conference of the Free Methodist Church. The congregation’s growth and dedication have inspired other churches and encouraged new church starts in the region.
