Mennonite Central Committee in B.C. to receive $229.6-million property donation from Rempel couple
Henry and Mary Rempel, a retired couple from British Columbia, have left behind a property donation valued at more than $200-million to the Mennonite Central Committee British Columbia (MCC BC). The donation, which includes a portfolio of rental properties and smaller land gifts beginning in 2012, will be used to generate income for the religious charity, likened to an endowment.
The Rempels built their wealth through real estate investments, starting in the mid-1980s with modest purchases in Prince George and expanding to locations such as Nanaimo, Parksville, Courtenay, Fort St. John, and Chilliwack. They lived modestly, residing in a simple apartment in New Westminster, despite their substantial holdings. Mary, a former teacher, managed the day-to-day operations of their rental properties, while Henry, a retired psychologist, focused on acquisitions.
Their financial strategy involved taking calculated risks, leveraging properties as collateral to grow their portfolio. “These were truly self-made people,” said their lawyer and friend Bill Battison. The couple’s frugal lifestyle and dedication to their investments reflected their values, which were deeply influenced by their backgrounds as refugees.
Henry’s family fled persecution in the former Soviet Union, and Mary’s family escaped Lithuania during World War II. Both were part of Mennonite communities, a group historically known for its pacifist stance and resistance to conscription. Their experiences as refugees likely shaped their commitment to charitable giving and community service.
The Rempels, who never had children, chose to dedicate their lives to fundraising and investing rather than leisure. Their only indulgence was a Mercedes-Benz, which Henry drove. The couple’s decision to donate their entire estate to MCC BC was consistent with their long-term intentions, as revealed by the charity.
MCC BC plans to use the donated properties to create a sustainable income stream, supporting its mission of relief work and community support. The donation underscores the couple’s dedication to their faith and their belief in the importance of serving others. Their legacy reflects a life of sacrifice, hard work, and a commitment to justice and care for the vulnerable.
