The Michigan Attorney General’s Office has released a 250-page report detailing allegations of sexual misconduct involving clergy members in the Diocese of Saginaw. This report marks the sixth in a series of investigations into Catholic church clergy abuse across the state, with the final report expected to cover all seven Michigan dioceses. The Saginaw report includes allegations against 37 priests and one deacon, 30 of whom are deceased or presumed dead, while eight others are living but no longer in active ministry.

The report outlines incidents that “may have violated Michigan criminal law,” with most occurring before 2002. Attorney General Dana Nessel emphasized the importance of survivor testimony, stating, “This report is only possible because of the bravery of so many… coming forward over decades to share their suffering.” She noted that accountability takes many forms and that publishing these accounts aims to foster acknowledgment for survivors and promote safer communities.

The statewide investigation, initiated in 2018 by the Michigan Department of Attorney General and Michigan State Police, has led to 11 criminal cases, resulting in nine convictions. All seven Catholic dioceses in Michigan have cooperated with the investigation, according to state officials. The Diocese of Saginaw, established in 1938, serves 56 parishes across 11 counties in Eastern and Central Michigan.

Bishop Robert D. Gruss of the Diocese of Saginaw expressed full cooperation with the Attorney General’s Office, stating, “We fully believe in greater accountability and transparency, which is essential in restoring the trust that has been broken, resulting from the misconduct of a few.” In a letter to survivors, Gruss conveyed deep sorrow and issued a sincere apology for the pain and suffering experienced by those abused by clergy members. He also expressed sadness over the circumstances and apologized on behalf of the Church and the Diocese.

The report compiles allegations of sexual misconduct and details how investigations were resolved, including when clergy members were removed from duties. The Diocese of Saginaw’s response underscores a commitment to accountability and transparency, acknowledging the harm caused and expressing a desire to restore trust within the community. The findings highlight the need for ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals within religious institutions.
