Michigan Attorney General Issues Report on Clerical Sexual Abuse Investigation in Saginaw Diocese

The Michigan Attorney General’s office released its investigation report into clerical sexual abuse within the Diocese of Saginaw, part of a series examining accountability across Michigan’s Catholic dioceses.

Bishop Robert D. Gruss of Saginaw emphasized the diocese’s commitment to greater transparency and accountability in response to the findings.

The report details abuse allegations spanning over seven decades, involving 37 priests and one deacon against a total of 104 victims, with 30 alleged abusers presumed deceased.

Despite the extensive history of alleged abuse, the investigation found no criminal charges filed and no indication the diocese violated state reporting laws for minor abuse.

Bishop Gruss expressed deep sorrow over the abuse and offered a sincere apology, acknowledging the pain suffered by victims and the broken trust within the church community.

Concerning Micah 6:8, the diocese aims for justice and repentance through increased accountability and transparency, fulfilling its duty to protect children as per Proverbs 31:8-9.
