Moravian Church Celebrates 63rd Annual Market Day in Lake Mills, Iowa
Lake Mills Moravian Church continues its tradition of hosting market day for the 63rd consecutive year, offering a variety of goods and services to the community. The event is scheduled for Saturday, October 19, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., with lunch available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The market features a range of items, including homemade crafts, donated jewelry, and locally sourced produce.
The luncheon, priced at $10, will feature Swiss steak, a staple of the event. Visitors can also find a candy booth offering the church’s famous caramels and Bev’s sea foam. Upstairs, the market includes a room with Moravian-themed items, while downstairs, a local farmer sells fresh produce and church members contribute home-baked goods for sale.
The market has its roots in the church’s history, beginning in 1961 when women organized small prayer circles. These groups eventually evolved into a fundraising effort to support the church and its global missions. Over time, the event expanded, drawing hundreds of attendees annually.
Church member Deb Van Ommeren noted that this year’s proceeds will support local churches, missions in Honduras, and relief efforts in North Carolina. The market remains a vital community gathering, reflecting the church’s commitment to service and outreach.
The event also serves as a platform for local artisans and farmers, showcasing handmade items and fresh produce. This tradition underscores the Moravian Church’s dedication to fostering community and supporting charitable causes through practical and spiritual means.
