Rev. Raymond Talmadge “Ray” Troutman, Jr., a dedicated servant of the Moravian Church, passed away on May 27, 2011, at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Born in Forsyth County, North Carolina, on June 25, 1928, he was the son of Raymond and Edith Reich Troutman. His life was marked by a deep commitment to his faith and community, as evidenced by his 37-year ministry within the Moravian Church.

Throughout his career, Rev. Troutman served in multiple locations across the United States, including churches in North Carolina such as Messiah, Wachovia Arbor, Moravia, Mt. Airy Grace, Calvary, and Kernersville. His service extended beyond the state, as he also ministered in Gnadenhutten, Ohio; Winter Springs, Florida; Westland, Michigan; and Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. After retiring from active pastoral work, he continued to serve for 12 years as the minister of visitation at New Philadelphia Moravian Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Rev. Troutman’s educational background included attendance at Gray High School, Moravian College, and Moravian Theological Seminary. He was a member of Calvary Moravian Church, where he remained an active participant in the community. His legacy is carried on by his wife, Betty Cockrell, and numerous family members, including children, grandchildren, and step-relatives.

A graveside funeral service was held at Salem Moravian Graveyard on June 4, 2011, followed by a memorial service at Calvary Moravian Church. The Rt. Rev. Lane Sapp officiated both services. In lieu of flowers, memorials were directed to Calvary Moravian Church, Hospice & Palliative Care Center, or a charity of the donor’s choice.

The Moravian Church, known for its emphasis on community and service, found in Rev. Troutman a faithful steward of its mission. His life and ministry reflect the values of care for the vulnerable and dedication to the community, themes that align with the biblical call to justice, mercy, and humble service. Micah 6:8 reminds us that God desires people to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him.
