Morris Street Baptist Church Celebrates 160 Years of Community Service and Faithful Ministry
Morris Street Baptist Church has stood as a cornerstone of faith and community for 160 years in Charleston, South Carolina. Founded in 1865 following the Civil War, the church has endured significant historical challenges, including the turbulent era of the Civil Rights movement. The current building, dedicated in 1909, has served as a gathering place for leaders and activists who organized and strategized for social justice causes.
Throughout its long history, the church has remained committed to serving its community through various ministries and outreach programs. Its dedication to neighbor-love has been evident in its efforts to support those in need, offering practical assistance and spiritual guidance. The church’s approach has emphasized compassion and service, reflecting a deep commitment to the well-being of its congregation and the broader community.
Rev. Caroles S. Taylor, the eighth and current pastor, is focused on strengthening the intergenerational ties within the congregation. He has introduced initiatives such as “Generation Sunday,” where services are led by different age groups, fostering connection and understanding across generations. These efforts aim to create a more unified and engaged community.
As part of its 160th-anniversary celebration, the church is hosting guest pastors for worship services from May 14 through May 16. These events will take place at the church, with some activities relocated due to maintenance issues on the lower level. The banquet, which was planned for the anniversary, has been moved to Royal Missionary Baptist Church in North Charleston.
The church continues to serve as a beacon of light in the Charleston community, reflecting a steadfast commitment to faith, resilience, and service. Its long history of outreach and ministry underscores a dedication to justice, mercy, and humble service, aligning with the biblical call to act with integrity and compassion.
