The Metro Nashville Police Department has released its final investigative report into the Covenant School shooting, revealing the motive behind the attack that left six people dead, including three children. The report, spanning 44 pages, details the circumstances surrounding the March 27, 2023, incident and the mindset of the perpetrator, Audrey Hale.

According to the report, Hale’s primary motive was a desire for notoriety. Investigators noted that she was influenced by the narratives of other school shooters, seeking to gain attention and recognition through violence. The report emphasizes that Hale never expressed feelings of being ostracized or bullied at The Covenant School, where she attended from kindergarten through fourth grade. She described those years as some of the happiest of her childhood, feeling safe and accepted.

The report indicates that Hale had no specific reasons for targeting the children at The Covenant School other than their age. She initially planned to attack Isaiah Creswell Middle School of the Arts, where she felt ostracized and experienced culture shock. The school’s diverse student body, with many from minority backgrounds and working-class households, led to her being mocked and bullied, with some students viewing her as a “rich white girl” deserving of scorn.

Hale originally intended to carry out the attack on April 13, 2021, coinciding with the Columbine shooting date. However, she ultimately decided against targeting Creswell Middle School, fearing she would not be able to control the narrative of the attack. Instead, she chose The Covenant School, which she had visited earlier in September 2021. During a faculty-guided tour, she photographed and videotaped locations within the school.

The report also notes that Hale had identified other potential targets, including Harpeth Hall Academy, Harding Academy, Nashville School of the Arts, and Hillsboro High School. She had no manifesto, but instead, she kept 16 notebooks detailing her isolation and loneliness. Police noted that anger was a consistent presence in her life, and she became increasingly obsessed with other school shooters during the summer of 2018. Her therapist had observed anger issues, and she underwent a psychological assessment.

The investigation underscores the importance of understanding the complex motivations behind such acts, while also highlighting the need for vigilance and support systems to address the emotional and psychological needs of individuals. As the report concludes, it serves as a reminder of the profound impact of isolation and the dangers of unchecked anger, urging communities to seek healing and restoration in accordance with the principles of mercy, justice, and care for the vulnerable.
