Members of the Newtownstewart Presbyterian Church fundraising committee have been finalizing preparations for the annual Festival of Poppies. The event, which focuses on remembrance and tribute, features a variety of handmade poppies crafted from painted plastic bottle bottoms, crocheted and knit materials, and other creative expressions of remembrance. These displays will be visible both inside and outside the church during the festival.

The festival officially opens on Wednesday, November 4, at 7:30 pm, followed by a talk at 8 pm by Mr. Francie Pancott on “The Reflection of a WW2 Soldier.” Viewing times for the festival will continue through the weekend, with extended hours on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The event aims to honor the memory of those who served and sacrificed in wartime, particularly highlighting the contributions of local individuals and families.

Church members have been actively involved in the preparation, including sisters Ann and Dorothy Crawford and Heather Stuart, who sewed handmade poppies onto a horse’s saddle. Richard Black, who has collected over 100 military cap badges, and Carol Robinson have sewn these badges onto poppies and a crocheted blanket. Jim Hunter, a church elder, has displayed a framed collage of photographs and medals donated by Newtownstewart native Billy Dunbar, who remembers three uncles who lost their lives in WW1.

Billy Dunbar’s father, Samuel, served in both World Wars and was present during the evacuation of Dunkirk before becoming a postman in Newtownstewart. The committee has emphasized the importance of remembering those who served, with a particular focus on local connections and personal stories of sacrifice. “It’s full steam ahead with project poppies. We are all excited to see our creations come together, and seeing the final result and sharing them with you,” said a church committee spokesperson.

The Festival of Remembrance will take place on November 11 at 7:30 pm in the 2000 Centre, with limited tickets available. Attendees are encouraged to contact the church committee or reach out via Facebook for more information. The event reflects the community’s commitment to honoring the past and preserving the memory of those who served.
