Northern Virginia Family Services Provides Backpacks with School Supplies to 60 Alexandria Students
Northern Virginia Family Services is addressing the back-to-school needs of children in Alexandria through its annual Back2School campaign. The city, known for its high median household income, still faces significant economic challenges, with 7.9% of residents living below the federal poverty line. Alexandria City Public Schools serve nearly 15,928 students, 45% of whom are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. For many families, the cost of school supplies, clothing, and child care can be a substantial burden, especially as the new school year approaches.
This year, Northern Virginia Family Services will distribute approximately 60 backpacks filled with grade-level supplies to children in Alexandria—nearly double the number served locally last year. The organization has assembled more than 1,400 backpacks across Northern Virginia, tailored to meet the specific needs of students from kindergarten through 12th grade. The supplies are based on local school districts’ supply lists, ensuring that each backpack is equipped with the essentials for academic success.
Kathleen McMahon, executive vice president of development and communications at Northern Virginia Family Services, emphasized the importance of the initiative. “We want to make sure that children have all that they need to start the school year,” she said. “This project helps offset costs for other household needs.” The effort began in June with a supply drive and outreach to local stores, corporate partners, and faith-based groups, reflecting a community-wide commitment to supporting families in need.
The backpacks are filled with items ranging from basic stationery to more specialized tools like calculators and noise-canceling headphones, depending on the student’s grade level. This approach ensures that children are equipped with the resources necessary to thrive in their classrooms. The initiative aligns with the biblical principle of caring for others, as seen in Matthew 25:35, which calls believers to serve those in need as if they were serving Christ himself.
As the first day of school draws near, families are working to stretch their budgets to cover after-school care, new clothing, and essential classroom supplies. The Back2School campaign provides a practical solution, helping to alleviate some of the financial strain on households. By focusing on tangible needs, Northern Virginia Family Services continues to demonstrate the value of neighbor-love and mercy, as encouraged in Galatians 6:10.
The effort also highlights the role of community collaboration in addressing local challenges. Volunteers and partners contribute time and resources to ensure that no child is left behind due to financial hardship. This collective action reflects a shared responsibility to support one another, a principle rooted in the call to love our neighbors as ourselves, as found in Leviticus 19:18. Through such initiatives, the community embodies the spirit of compassion and justice, striving to meet the needs of the most vulnerable.
