Greek Orthodox Patriarch Theophilos III expressed deep sorrow over the bombing of the Orthodox Church of St. Porphyrios in Gaza, which killed 18 Christians. The attack has left a profound impact on the Christian community in Gaza and the broader Holy Land. Survivors, he said, have shown resilience and faith, coming together to support one another through prayer and solidarity.

A special prayer for peace was held at the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, where Patriarch Theophilos III led the ceremony. The event was attended by the Apostolic Nuncio to Israel, Archbishop Adolfo Tito Yllana, and the Custos of the Holy Land, Father Francesco Patton. The Patriarch emphasized the importance of unity and compassion in the face of violence.

In an interview with the Osservatore Romano, Patriarch Theophilos III highlighted the duty of Christians to be peacemakers and to seek justice. He called for a response to the bombing that reflects the transformative power of faith and the capacity of the human spirit to overcome adversity. The Patriarch stressed that the Christian community, through its leaders and institutions, is committed to providing humanitarian aid and relief to those affected by the tragedy.

The Patriarch noted that the Christian community in Palestine and Israel is marked by hope and resilience. Despite the challenges, he said, the faithful continue to work together to support one another and to uphold the values of love and compassion. The Patriarch and other church leaders are collaborating with local partners to address the urgent needs of the affected population, including food, shelter, and medical care.

The Patriarch also mentioned the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where the Israeli decision to cut off essential supplies has exacerbated the suffering of the local population. He called for continued advocacy and practical support to ensure that those in need receive the assistance they require. The Patriarch’s words reflect a commitment to the principles of justice, mercy, and humble service, echoing the call of Micah 6:8 to act with integrity and compassion.
