Palestinian Christians focus on peace initiatives amid rising Holy Land tensions
Palestinian Christians in the Holy Land continue to seek peace amid rising tensions and violence. As Hamas moves toward disarmament and Israeli forces face escalating clashes in the West Bank, the region remains deeply divided. The fragile agreement between Hamas and Israel centers on the disarmament of Hamas and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza, though the order of these steps remains a critical point of contention.
In the West Bank, tensions have flared following a July 24 confrontation that left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead. More than 100 Israeli settlers marched on Palestinian villages, further deepening the divide. Retired Israeli military leaders have warned that continued violence could lead to “consequences…even more catastrophic than the October 7 Hamas atrocities,” highlighting the gravity of the situation.
Amid this turmoil, Bethlehem Bible College stands as a beacon of hope and reconciliation. Located near both Gaza and the West Bank, the institution is actively training Palestinian Christians to be peacemakers. President Jack Sara emphasizes the college’s commitment to equipping students with the tools to foster peace in a region marked by hostility.
“We run a special program to create peace agents,” Sara says. “One of our degrees is Peace and Justice, and we focus on this by helping the students to get tools to be peacemakers in such a context.” The college’s mission aligns with the biblical call to love one’s neighbor and seek justice, as seen in Romans 12:18, which encourages believers to live in harmony with others.
The college’s charitable arm, The Shepherd Society, has been instrumental in responding to the humanitarian needs of Palestinians since the 2023 conflict. Through initiatives like food distribution, medical aid, and job creation, the organization has provided critical support to thousands. “We didn’t stop working since day one of the war,” Sara says. “We’ve been helping with food distributions through our partner there (in Gaza), the churches.”
As regional conflict intensifies, the needs of families in the Holy Land have grown more urgent. Displacement, unemployment, and limited access to basic necessities have placed additional strain on already vulnerable communities. Palestinian Christians, however, remain committed to addressing these challenges through acts of compassion and service.
Their efforts reflect a deep conviction to care for the marginalized and uphold the values of mercy and justice. In a region often defined by division, these Christians continue to offer a message of hope and reconciliation, embodying the spirit of Matthew 5:9, which speaks of those who bring peace being blessed.
