Palm Beach Diocese Confirms Allegations of Sexual Misconduct and Abuse of Power Against Boynton Beach Priest

The Diocese of Palm Beach has confirmed through an investigation that allegations of sexual misconduct, abuse of power, and fraud were substantiated against a priest from Boynton Beach. The findings were announced by Bishop Manuel de Jesús Rodríguez in a letter concerning Rev. Alex J. Vargas, who had served as pastor at St. Thomas More Parish. The diocese received notification of these serious allegations on June 17 and promptly reported the matter to the Florida Department of Children and Families, law enforcement, and the State Attorney’s Office. An independent investigation was subsequently conducted by Renaissance Associates, Ltd.

The investigation concluded that while there was insufficient information to substantiate an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor, there was adequate evidence to support claims of sexual misconduct, abuse of power, financial malfeasance, and violations of the diocese’s Code of Conduct. These violations included issues related to sexual contact, harassment, conflicts of interest, and administrative responsibilities. Bishop Rodríguez accepted these findings and recommendations, resulting in the continued removal of Vargas from ministry, with his ministerial faculties withdrawn. However, Rodríguez emphasized that this removal does not equate to a legal determination of guilt, and Vargas remains innocent until proven guilty under civil and canon law.

The diocese has stated that no further information will be released until the conclusion of a canonical judicial process, which will allow Vargas the opportunity to participate. This situation highlights the importance of accountability and justice within religious institutions, as emphasized in biblical teachings such as Micah 6:8, which calls for justice, mercy, and walking humbly with God. As the community awaits further developments, the focus remains on ensuring justice and care for all involved, reflecting the values of truth and neighbor-love.
