Point Loma Nazarene University cancels poet PΓ‘draig Γ Tuama’s speaking event over concerns about his religious writings
Point Loma Nazarene University President Kerry Fulcher announced the cancellation of an upcoming appearance by poet and theologian PΓ‘draig Γ Tuama, citing concerns over some of his religious writings. The decision, made after reviewing Γ Tuamaβs work, was based on the universityβs stance that certain theological positions, including the divine identity of Jesus and his sinlessness, are central to its Christian faith. Fulcher emphasized that while the university values diverse perspectives and theological inquiry, Γ Tuamaβs writings were seen as challenging foundational beliefs.
Γ Tuama, a best-selling author and faculty member at Yale Divinity School, was set to speak at the 32nd Annual Writerβs Symposium by the Sea on February 25, alongside other notable authors. Fulcher stated the decision was not made lightly and acknowledged the disappointment it may cause. He noted that the university has hosted writers with differing beliefs and appreciates literature that engages with complex theological questions. However, he expressed concern that Γ Tuamaβs work goes beyond questioning specific teachings to reimagining core Christian convictions.
The symposium is organized by Dean Nelson, a journalism professor at PLNU, who arranged for Γ Tuama to speak at First United Methodist Church in Mission Valley instead. Nelson criticized Fulcherβs decision, suggesting he misunderstood the nature of Γ Tuamaβs work. βHeβs taking something that is clearly someoneβs imagination and just exploring something. Heβs not making a theological statement,β Nelson said, emphasizing the creative and imaginative aspects of the poetβs writing.
Katie Manning, a writing professor at the university, expressed her dismay with the decision, hoping Fulcher would reconsider. Manning believed the choice to cancel Γ Tuamaβs appearance was premature and urged for further consideration of the poetβs contributions. The controversy highlights the tension between academic freedom and institutional doctrinal boundaries, as well as the challenges of interpreting religious expression in a pluralistic setting.
PΓ‘draig Γ Tuama, 51, is an Irish writer known for his work in spirituality, conflict resolution, and religion. He spent nearly two decades in Belfast working on peace initiatives and hosts the popular podcast Poetry Unbound. His writing, including the bestseller *44 Poems on Being with Each Other*, has garnered widespread recognition. The situation underscores the broader debate over the role of religious expression in academic and public spaces, particularly when it challenges established theological frameworks.
