Church of the Nazarene Member Jo Ann Gutekunst Dies at 72, Remembered for Faith and Family
Jo Ann Gutekunst was a devoted woman whose life was deeply rooted in faith. Raised in the Church of the Nazarene, she carried the values of her faith into every aspect of her life. Each morning, she began her day with prayer, Bible reading, and devotions, reflecting her commitment to spiritual discipline. She was known for her unwavering prayers for others and for the people she loved, often lifting them up in supplication.
Jo Ann’s early years were shaped by her upbringing as the daughter of a preacher, which instilled in her a strong sense of service and community. She later taught Sunday school at the Church of the Nazarene, sharing her faith with others and nurturing the spiritual growth of children. She also remained active in Glad Tidings Church in Lake Charles, continuing to engage with her congregation and participate in church life.
Beyond her spiritual dedication, Jo Ann had a passion for various hobbies and activities. She enjoyed reading, cooking, and baking, often sharing her talents with family and friends. Her skill as a seamstress was remarkable, as she could create entire dresses from scratch. Jo Ann also cherished traveling, spending many years exploring the country with her daughter, Deborah “Debbie” Gutekunst, until Debbie’s passing in 2016.
Jo Ann’s family was central to her life. She treasured her son, William, and daughter, Debbie, and eagerly anticipated becoming a grandmother. When her grandson, Ezekiel Gutekunst, was born, it was a profound blessing. She also held a special bond with her dog, who became one of her greatest companions. Her relationships with her cousins, Judy Dugas, Jimmy Wayne, and others, added to the richness of her life.
Her faith also brought her a circle of meaningful friendships. Jo Ann was part of a close-knit group of older Christian singles who shared a love for travel, meals, and Christian concerts. These friendships provided her with fellowship and joy, reinforcing the importance of community in her life.
Jo Ann is survived by her son, William “Bill” Gutekunst and his wife, Cinthia, and her grandson, Ezekiel Gutekunst. She was preceded in death by her husband of 27 years, George Gutekunst; her daughter, Deborah Gutekunst; her sister, Pat Harris; and her parents, Walter Willis Hoffpauir and Myrtle Edith Faulk Hoffpauir.
A graveside service for Jo Ann will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 2, 2026, at Highland Memory Gardens in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
