Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) General Assembly Advances Study on Sexuality and Family, Approves Optional LGBTQIA+ Pastor Openness Indicator
The 227th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) took significant steps toward addressing issues of sexuality, family, and institutional practices. Commissioners voted to allow congregations to signal their openness to calling an LGBTQIA+ pastor through an optional feature in the Ministry Discernment Profile. This initiative, part of GEN-06, was proposed by the Advocacy Committee for LGBTQIA+ Equity (ACQ+E) and aims to provide greater clarity for candidates and congregations, helping them align values more transparently.
Rev. Ashley Birt of ACQ+E emphasized that the proposal is not a mandatory checkbox but a collaborative effort with the Church Leadership Connection and partner organizations. The goal is to help candidates identify churches that align with their values while preventing unnecessary harm. Birt noted that discrimination already exists in the call process and that this feature would aid in navigating that reality more clearly.
Despite support for LGBTQIA+ inclusion, several commissioners opposed the overture. Rev. Jo Wiersma of John Knox Presbytery, a trans nonbinary pastor serving a rural Midwestern church, expressed concern about the proposal. She argued that the measure could hinder ongoing conversations in rural communities, where queer individuals can play a significant role in growth and development. The Assembly approved GEN-06 by a vote of 339-138.
Commissioners also advanced GEN-09, a broad proposal to develop theological, biblical, and ethical frameworks addressing human sexuality, flourishing relationships, family, and gender. The committee amended the proposal to combine related work from another overture and ensure participation by historically marginalized communities. The central debate involved a minority report seeking to add language requiring the study to include “diverse theological views from across the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).” Advocates argued the language would foster inclusivity and comprehensive understanding.
The Assembly’s actions reflect a broader effort to engage with complex issues within the denomination. As the PC(USA) continues to navigate these discussions, the focus remains on fostering dialogue, ensuring inclusivity, and addressing the needs of diverse communities. The process underscores the denomination’s commitment to addressing contemporary challenges while maintaining its theological and ethical foundations.
The decision to advance these proposals highlights the ongoing evolution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) in response to societal changes and internal calls for reform. As the denomination moves forward, the emphasis on transparency, inclusivity, and ethical engagement remains central to its mission. The Assembly’s actions serve as a step toward greater clarity and alignment within the church’s practices and policies.
