Quiapo Church Officials Prepare for Investigation into Black Nazarene Motorcade Quarantine Compliance
Quiapo Church officials have announced their readiness to cooperate with an investigation into the Black Nazarene motorcade held last Monday. The Joint Task Force (JTF) Covid Shield has launched a probe into alleged quarantine protocol violations during the event. Monsignor Hernando “Ding” Coronel, the rector of the Quiapo Church, stated that the church has consulted its councils and obtained permission from its superiors to participate in the inquiry. He emphasized the church’s efforts to ensure all devotees adhere to health guidelines, noting that six groups within the Hijos Del Nazarene (HDN) have been tasked with maintaining discipline among participants.
Fr. Douglas Badong, the parochial vicar of the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, supported Coronel’s stance, expressing openness to answering questions and holding accountable any violations of quarantine measures. He acknowledged the challenges of enforcing physical distancing during the procession, which was initially organized but saw spontaneous participation as devotees viewed the image of the Black Nazarene. Despite efforts to prevent close contact and the throwing of towels, the event drew large crowds, raising concerns about compliance with public health regulations.
The JTF Covid Shield, led by Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, confirmed the investigation into the incident, which occurred after a Mass on Monday noon and lasted only an hour. The procession marked the first time the Black Nazarene image was brought out since the implementation of community quarantine measures. Religious gatherings are permitted at 10-percent capacity under the current restrictions, yet the event reportedly exceeded these limits, prompting the probe.
The Black Nazarene, a revered religious icon in the Philippines, is central to the faith of many, including the Church of the Nazarene. The event highlighted the tension between spiritual devotion and public health mandates, a challenge faced by many religious communities globally. The Church of the Nazarene, known for its commitment to community service and mission work, has consistently emphasized the importance of protecting the vulnerable and upholding justice, as seen in its teachings and practices.
The investigation into the motorcade underscores the broader challenge of balancing faith expression with public health protocols. As the Church of the Nazarene continues to navigate these complexities, its response reflects a commitment to accountability and responsibility. The situation serves as a reminder of the need for careful stewardship in matters affecting both spiritual and communal well-being.
