The Salvation Army Centre of Hope in Nanaimo has expanded its overnight winter shelter services, offering 30 beds nightly beginning Nov. 1 through to the end of March. This increase follows a major renovation that relocated longer-term beds to a new, multi-storey building on-site. The facility, located at 19 Nicol St., provides guests with a warm, safe place to rest after dinner, along with meals and breakfasts to support them throughout the day.

Executive director Bern Muller explained that the new shelter beds complement existing services in the city, including shelters run by the Nanaimo Family Life Association and the Unitarian Shelter. He emphasized the importance of winter shelter beds, noting that nighttime temperatures can be particularly harsh for those without stable housing. The program is funded through a partnership with BC Housing, marking a net gain in available beds for the community.

Guests arriving at the Centre of Hope undergo a brief intake process, including health screenings, to ensure cohesive community support. Muller highlighted the collaboration with local agencies to provide essential items such as blankets and coats, which are crucial for individuals living in unsheltered conditions. These resources help create a more comfortable and supportive environment for those in need.

The expanded Centre of Hope, previously known as the New Hope Centre, has been welcoming guests since the summer. The renovation has allowed the organization to better serve the community, addressing the growing demand for shelter and support during the winter months. The initiative reflects The Salvation Army’s ongoing commitment to providing care and assistance to those facing homelessness.
