Salvation Army Boyertown Corps Appoints Captains Derek and Betty Ellen Barrett as New Officers (Boyertown, Pennsylvania)
The Salvation Army Boyertown Corps has appointed Captains Derek and Betty Ellen Barrett as its new Corps Officers, entrusting them with leading the organization’s church ministry, community outreach, and daily operations. The couple’s appointment marks a new chapter for the local Corps, which has long been a cornerstone of service and spiritual care in the Boyertown area.
In their roles, the Barretts will oversee worship services, social service programs, youth ministries, volunteer engagement, and other initiatives aimed at supporting individuals and families within the community. Their leadership will guide the Corps in continuing its mission of compassion and care, reflecting the organization’s commitment to meeting both spiritual and practical needs.
Derek Barrett grew up within The Salvation Army, as the son and grandson of officers, while Betty Ellen Barrett was drawn to the organization’s mission through her work at Camp Ladore, a retreat and conference center in Pennsylvania’s northern Pocono Mountains. After spending about 12 years in The Salvation Army’s Service Extension Department, the couple transitioned into ministry leadership, beginning their service in State College in 2014. They later attended The Salvation Army College for Officer Training and were commissioned as officers in 2019.
Prior to their appointment in Boyertown, the Barretts served at The Salvation Army Roxborough Corps in Philadelphia and the Pottsville Corps. Capt. Betty Ellen Barrett expressed gratitude for the community’s warm welcome, noting the vital role of volunteers in sustaining the Corps’ work. “So much of the work happening at the Corps is made possible by dedicated volunteers who give their time and talents to serve others,” she said.
The Boyertown Corps provides a range of programs to support local residents, including a soup kitchen on Mondays and Tuesdays, a food pantry on Thursdays and Fridays, and Club 316, a weekly youth program. According to The Salvation Army, the Corps serves approximately 26,000 individuals annually through its ministries, which include food assistance, spiritual care, youth activities, and seasonal outreach.
Looking forward, the Barretts aim to strengthen existing programs while exploring new opportunities for children and teenagers, including potential expansions in youth engagement and community development. Their leadership reflects a continued dedication to serving the needs of the Boyertown community with compassion and integrity.
