The Salvation Army’s Commission Examines Membership, Covenant, and Belonging in Light of Doctrine and Discipleship
The Salvation Army is exploring what it means to belong to its international movement, focusing on membership, covenant and discipleship. The Commission on Membership, Covenant and Belonging (COMCAB), convened for its second in-person meeting at Sunbury Court near London, is examining how membership structures align with the organization’s doctrine, Orders and Regulations, and other official publications. Appointed by General Lyndon Buckingham in July 2026, the commission is considering fundamental questions about belonging within both the Salvation Army and the broader Christian Church.
Central to the discussions is the concept of discipleship, emphasizing growth in faith and living out the Army’s commitment to holiness. The four-day gathering included focused discussions, worship, prayer and reflection, as members explored the theological foundations of membership and the role of covenant in relationships with God and The Salvation Army. The commission continues to meet regularly online and work in smaller groups, supported by a wider network of corresponding members.
An important next stage involves listening to a range of voices from across the international Salvation Army, including children and young people, leaders of Salvation Army territories and representatives from International Headquarters. Commission members have expressed gratitude for the prayers and encouragement already received, remaining united in faith and purpose as they work toward a shared aspiration: that everyone who belongs to The Salvation Army might grow as a faithful and fruitful disciple of Jesus.
The Salvation Army has launched *Frontlines*, a new monthly podcast bringing listeners closer to the people, stories and issues shaping its mission around the world. Commissioners Garth and Patti Niemand have been welcomed into their new roles as The Salvation Army’s Chief of the Staff and World Secretary for Women’s Ministries. Commissioners Edward and Shelley Hill have been honored at The Salvation Army’s International Headquarters as they prepare to enter retirement. A powerful new exhibition at the International Headquarters shares stories that reflect the organization’s mission and values.
