Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island, Neb., is celebrating 160 years of service to the community. Founded in 1866, the congregation has been a cornerstone of the city since its earliest days. The church’s long history reflects a deep commitment to neighbor-love and practical mercy, rooted in the belief that serving others is a vital part of faith.

Light filters through century-old stained glass windows in one of the church’s two sanctuaries, each telling a story of faith and perseverance. Jeanne Graves, a long-time member, shared that the windows were once stored in a barn before being repurposed for the sanctuary. The windows symbolize the enduring legacy of the congregation, which has grown and adapted over generations.

Jeanne and Tom Graves, who grew up in the church, met in the choir as high school students and were married at Trinity United Methodist Church. Their story, like many before them, reflects the early days of the congregation, when worship took place in homes and circuit riders delivered sermons on horseback. The church was officially established in 1866, marking the beginning of a legacy of service.

A handmade timeline inside the church documents key milestones, including the three locations where the congregation worshipped before settling in its current building in 1927. The original sanctuary, known as Gollaher Hall, is a testament to the church’s humble beginnings and its unwavering dedication to the community.

The church’s ministry extends far beyond its walls, embodying the spirit of Matthew 25:35, which calls believers to serve those in need. Volunteers work tirelessly to address food insecurity in Grand Island, where approximately 11% of residents face regular hunger. The congregation operates a community garden, a food pantry, and other programs aimed at providing practical support.

One of the church’s most impactful initiatives is its Loaves and Fishes program, which distributes approximately 550 meals each month. Marge Terman, a church member, highlighted the program’s role in meeting the needs of the community. “It’s not just about feeding people,” she said. “It’s about showing love and compassion.”

Tom Graves expressed hope that the church’s mission will continue to grow and serve Grand Island for generations to come. “We hope that it continues to serve the area of Grand Island,” he said. “That’s part of why we chose this part of town.” The congregation’s enduring presence is a reminder of the power of faith in action, rooted in the call to love one’s neighbor as oneself.
