Twenty-one young adults from New Zion Church travel to Brakpan for community outreach.
Twenty-one young adults from New Zion Church are set to travel to Brakpan, Gauteng, from Friday, April 24 to Monday, April 27, as part of an outreach initiative focused on community engagement and leadership development. The group is drawn from the church’s Young Adults ministry, which was established in 2024 to serve members aged 18 to 35. These individuals gather weekly for fellowship, worship, and personal growth, aiming to cultivate a spirit of service and discipleship.
New Zion Ministries International, which oversees ten churches across South Africa, includes the Brakpan congregation as one of its smaller branches. This church has faced long-term challenges in achieving stability and growth. However, recent support visits and prayer initiatives from other branches have contributed to renewed momentum within the Brakpan community.
Pastor Alison Redlinghys, who leads the Young Adults ministry at New Zion Church, explained that the trip was motivated by ongoing concern for the Brakpan leadership and an invitation from the local pastoral team. “We are trying by all means to fulfil the Great Commission,” she said, referencing Matthew 28:19-20. “This trip is an opportunity to support local leadership and demonstrate the church’s commitment to community upliftment.”
Participants expressed enthusiasm about the trip, emphasizing their desire to support local leadership and gain hands-on experience in community outreach. One participant, Jade Swarts, mentioned that preparation included daily reflection and weekly fasting in the lead-up to the journey. This spiritual focus underscores the group’s commitment to aligning their actions with their faith.
To support the initiative, a fundraising movie evening will be held on Friday, April 10, at 7:30 pm at 82 Samantha Street in Montrose Park, at New Zion Church. The event will feature food and refreshments, including hot dogs, chips, drinks, sweets, hot chocolate, coffee, tea, and baked goods, all sold to help cover travel and logistics costs.
The initiative aims to strengthen ties between communities, encourage participation, and support the long-term growth of the Brakpan congregation. It also seeks to inspire continued outreach efforts in Mitchells Plain and surrounding areas, reflecting a broader commitment to neighbor-love and practical service.
Those interested in donating to the cause can contact Pastor Alison Redlinghys via email at aredlinghys25@gmail.com for more information. This effort exemplifies the call to serve others as a reflection of faith, as emphasized in Galatians 6:10, which encourages believers to do good to all people and especially to those in the household of faith.
