Two Former Christian School Employees Face 31 Charges for Sexually Abusing Student
Two former Christian school employees face 31 charges for sexually abusing a student. David Alan Wakefield, 60, served as principal and athletic director at the school until 2020. His wife, Rachael Jean Wakefield, 54, was a substitute teacher and coach. Authorities in Clackamas County allege the couple sexually abused a student over approximately four years, beginning when the student was 14.
The Wakefields were indicted by a grand jury on February 20. David faces 20 counts of sex abuse in the second degree, while his wife faces 11 counts of the same charge. According to The Oregonian, David was aware of the allegations since at least 2021. He surrendered himself once charges were filed against him.
The school expressed sorrow upon learning of the charges. “Although this couple have not been connected to the church or school for some time, Damascus Community Church and Christian School still take these reports very seriously and the safety of our students and staff is a top priority,” the school stated. It pledged cooperation with law enforcement and the courts and urged anyone with additional information to contact the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office.
The couple was booked into the Clackamas County Jail and released on $100,000 bail. Police believe there may be more victims and have asked anyone with knowledge of the situation to come forward.
The case highlights the importance of protecting the vulnerable. Proverbs 31:8-9 reminds us to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves and to defend the rights of the poor and needy.
