UK Channel 4 Releases Evidence of Sexual Abuse Allegations Against Former Adventist Church Member
Channel 4 has released evidence suggesting a former member of the South England Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Dr. Donald Kelly, engaged in grooming and sexually abusing young black men starting in the 1960s. The investigation, which spans decades, includes testimonies from five victims, some of whom chose to remain anonymous. The victims, aged between seven and fifteen at the time of the alleged abuse, describe similar tactics used by Kelly, including isolating them in private settings such as hotel rooms or during trips to Oxford University.
According to the survivors, Kelly’s actions were not only known to those directly affected but also circulated within the church community. Michael Smith, one of the victims, recalls a meeting where another prominent church member, close to Kelly, addressed the boys, warning them that speaking out could lead to confrontation. The fear of Kelly’s influence and reputation within the church community contributed to a climate of silence and suppression.
Kelly, who died of cancer in November 2022, was a well-respected figure in the Adventist community, known for his work in medical missionary programs across Africa and other regions. His prominence allowed him to gain the trust of church leaders and parents, despite the allegations against him. Channel 4’s investigation highlights that evidence of the abuse has been presented to the Adventist church for over three decades, with the Metropolitan Police involved since 2009.
In 2021, the South England Conference initiated independent investigations into Kelly’s alleged behaviors. However, according to the victims, the church was only made aware of the abuse claims in late 2021, despite the long-standing nature of the allegations. Channel 4’s research includes timelines and statistics detailing the abuse claims, with evidence dating back nearly three decades, spanning Kelly’s time in the UK and his missionary work abroad.
The South England Conference of the Seventh-day Adventist Church has not yet released the findings of its investigations into the allegations against Dr. Donald Kelly. The case raises questions about accountability, transparency, and the protection of vulnerable individuals within religious communities.
