US Rep. Haley Stevens: Anti-Zionism Poses Threat to US-Israel Relationship

In a recent interview with The Jerusalem Post, U.S. Representative Haley Stevens (D-MI) articulated her concerns about the rising movement of anti-Zionism, which she believes threatens the longstanding relationship between the United States and Israel. Stevens, who recently lost her Democratic primary race in Michigan, emphasized that this movement extends beyond policy critique and has become a pervasive issue in American and Western discourse.

Stevens, identifying as a “traditional and classical liberal Democrat,” has been a consistent supporter of the U.S.-Israel relationship. However, her stance has subjected her to significant criticism and personal attacks. She recounted experiences of being booed off a convention stage and facing harassment at public events, including labor gatherings in Detroit. Despite these challenges, Stevens remains committed to her principles, stating, “I’m not a victim; I’m not a hero. I’m a public servant.”

The representative expressed concern that the tactics employed by anti-Israel factions pose a threat to the democratic fabric of the United States. She argued that allowing dissent to devolve into societal breakdown is unacceptable, emphasizing the importance of maintaining civil discourse. Stevens highlighted the Democratic Senate primary in Michigan as a reflection of the broader national debate over the Democratic Party’s direction, particularly in relation to its stance on Israel.

In her view, the rhetoric from the far Left of her party has transcended legitimate criticism of Israeli government policy, instead becoming a vehicle for projecting domestic frustrations onto Israel. Stevens stressed that Israel should not be the target of disproportionate scrutiny, especially given its status as the only democracy in the Middle East.
