Warren homeless shelter closes after running out of money, officials point to political issues

As scorching temperatures grip Michigan, Evette Austin found herself in dire need of shelter, only to discover that the Friend of the Father Foundation in Warren had closed its doors, leaving her without a place to go. The shelter, which had provided temporary housing and job resources, shut down after running out of funds, leaving many in the community without support at a time when it was most needed.

Raymond Deloatch, the foundation’s leader, attributed the closure to political missteps, stating that the process of securing funding was derailed and ultimately led to the shelter’s shutdown. He emphasized the importance of community collaboration, noting that he had sought teamwork to keep the city clean and its streets safe.

Macomb County Commissioner Michael Howard II lamented the loss of the nonprofit, highlighting the critical role it played in offering job training, education, and respite from extreme weather. He described the shelter as a vital resource that had served the community in multiple ways, leaving a significant gap in local support systems.

Warren City Councilmember Jonathan Lafferty proposed a law to secure funding for nonprofits like Friend of the Father Foundation, aiming to ensure such services could continue. However, the proposal was not enacted, with Lafferty blaming the mayor for the delay and urging her to fulfill her responsibilities or allow others to step in.

The mayor’s office denied responsibility, stating that the city does not operate a municipal homeless shelter and that the 2027 budget did not include funding for such services. Despite public statements about the challenges faced by the unhoused, the city’s actions have not matched its words, according to Lafferty.

As the community grapples with the consequences of the shelter’s closure, the need for practical service and public responsibility becomes increasingly evident.
