Youth leaders from across the United States gathered in New Orleans for the 2024 National Lutheran Youth Workers Conference, held July 21–24. Over 500 participants, including youth, young adults, and adult leaders, came together to connect and prepare for the 2025 Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS) Youth Gathering. The conference aimed to encourage and equip attendees in their vocations to serve youth and their congregations.

The event focused on the Seven Practices of Healthy Youth Ministry, a framework developed by LCMS Youth Ministry. Adult participants received a free copy of the Concordia Publishing House book of the same name, authored by Rev. Dr. Mark Kiessling, LCMS Youth Ministry director, and Director of Christian Education (DCE) Julianna Shults. The book provides deeper insight into the seven practices and offers practical guidance for congregational application.

Rev. Dr. Peter Nafzger served as the main session speaker, guiding participants through Bible studies centered on the 2025 Gathering theme, “ENDURE.” The studies explored Bible stories that reflect the theme and applied it to youth ministry and daily life. Nafzger, associate professor of Practical Theology at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, emphasized the importance of listening to and serving young people in congregations.

Nafzger also highlighted the relevance of the theme for all Christians in an increasingly less Christian context. He explained that endurance comes through faith in Jesus, who endured suffering and was vindicated in His resurrection. He encouraged participants to remain united with Jesus and the people of God, enduring until the return of Jesus and the new creation.

The conference’s four main sessions explored how the seven practices intersect, particularly in their emphasis on relationships with parents and supportive adults within the congregation. Sessions also focused on understanding baptismal faith, which leads to a clearer grasp of vocation, service, and leadership. Experienced youth ministry practitioners, including pastors, DCEs, parents, and young leaders, shared their expertise and practical advice on implementing the seven practices.
