Louisiana Churches Join State Initiative to Support Foster Children
Louisiana churches are being called to participate in a new state initiative aimed at supporting foster children and families. The Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) has partnered with faith-based organizations across the state to launch “A Home for Every Child,” a program designed to ensure every child has access to care, connection, and support.
The initiative emphasizes the role of local communities, particularly churches, in addressing the needs of children in foster care. At Bethany Church in Baton Rouge, state officials highlighted the importance of faith-based congregations in serving their communities. “Faith-based congregations have a heart for service,” a speaker noted, reflecting on the mission of churches in Louisiana. “They are staples across the state, and by investing in them, we invest in the future of Louisiana.”
Governor Jeff Landry encouraged churches to engage with the initiative, emphasizing the potential impact of their involvement. “If every church took a child,” a speaker said, “there would not be a child for want in the state of Louisiana.” This statement underscores the belief that collective action can lead to significant change, echoing the biblical principle of caring for the vulnerable.
Rebecca Harris, secretary of DCFS, addressed common misconceptions about fostering and supporting families. She noted that many people underestimate the need within their own communities. “The child playing with your child on the playground may be in foster care,” she explained. “We must raise awareness about the local needs, as we serve approximately 4,400 children in foster care daily.”
Harris emphasized that helping foster families does not require complex efforts. “Often, we don’t realize the need is right in our own communities,” she said. “If someone walked up to you with a child and said this child needs help, I don’t know a single person who wouldn’t step forward and offer assistance.”
The initiative invites individuals and congregations to visit the DCFS website at dcfs.louisiana.gov for more information on how to get involved. By leveraging the strengths of churches and local communities, the state hopes to create a network of support that reflects the values of compassion and neighbor-love.
The program aligns with the Christian call to serve others, as seen in Matthew 25:35, where Jesus says, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” Churches and ministries are encouraged to see their involvement as an extension of this divine mandate, offering practical support and care to those in need.
