Louisiana Churches Asked to Help Foster Children Through New State Initiative
The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) has partnered with faith-based organizations across the state to launch “A Home for Every Child,” an initiative designed to ensure every child has access to care, connection, and support. State officials highlighted the role of faith-based congregations at Bethany Church in Baton Rouge, and Gov. Jeff Landry encouraged churches to engage with the program.
DCFS Secretary Rebecca Harris said the state serves approximately 4,400 children in foster care each day. She said many people underestimate the need for foster support within their own communities. The initiative invites individuals and congregations to visit dcfs.louisiana.gov for more information. Its framing as an extension of the Christian call to serve others cites Matthew 25:35.
A separate report from NOLA.com describes a Foster Care Community Collaborative event held at the Family Youth Service Center, where Harris emphasized early intervention. According to that account, she challenged faith leaders to recognize that families often reach a breaking point before formal reports are made to the agency. Harris also noted that many children enter foster care only after abuse or neglect has occurred, a reality that calls for protecting the vulnerable (Psalm 82:3).
The same report says DCFS hosted an event on a Wednesday at Bethany Church in Baton Rouge that targeted faith leaders. Harris said faith communities are uniquely positioned to connect families in need with available resources. The report states that there is a shortage of available foster homes in Louisiana.
Both reports place the initiative within a broader push to strengthen partnerships between the state and local congregations. The NOLA.com account frames the effort as building stronger partnerships with local congregations to support struggling families and foster children, while the KSLA.com account focuses on inviting churches to help foster children through the new initiative.
Faith groups are being encouraged to provide emotional and practical support to families in crisis.
